Hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA) is a laboratory method used to measure levels of toxic metals, trace elements, and essential nutrients present in the body over time. LabWest provides professional hair analysis to identify mineral imbalances, toxic element exposure, and nutritional status using a small hair sample collected near the scalp.
Unlike blood testing, which reflects mineral levels at a specific point in time, hair tissue analysis can provide a longer-term view of mineral accumulation and metabolic patterns. This makes it a useful screening tool for identifying exposure to environmental toxins or potential nutrient imbalances.
LabWest performs hair mineral testing at its Malaga laboratory in Perth using established analytical techniques and quality-controlled procedures. The results are presented in a detailed laboratory report that can be interpreted by a qualified healthcare professional, such as a doctor or naturopath.
What Does Hair Analysis Measure?
LabWest hair tissue analysis measures a wide range of elements that may influence health and metabolism. The report includes three main categories of elements:
Toxic Elements
These elements may interfere with normal biological processes when present at elevated levels. The analysis measures eight key toxic metals, including aluminium, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, lead, and uranium. Monitoring these elements can help identify possible environmental exposure or accumulation in the body.
Trace Elements
Trace elements are present in small amounts but can provide valuable insight into biological processes and potential exposures. The LabWest report measures multiple trace elements, including nickel, lithium, silver, barium, titanium, and rare earth elements. These elements may provide supporting information when assessing metabolic or environmental factors affecting health.
Nutrient Elements
Essential minerals are required for many physiological functions, including enzyme activity, metabolism, and cellular processes. The analysis includes 16 nutrient elements, including calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, selenium, potassium, and phosphorus. Evaluating the balance of these elements may help health practitioners assess nutritional status and metabolic trends.
Understanding the Hair Analysis Report
The LabWest Hair Tissue Analysis Report presents measured element concentrations alongside reference ranges derived from research data and laboratory analysis. Results are illustrated with charts and comparative ranges to help identify elements that fall within or outside expected levels.
In addition to individual element measurements, the report includes key mineral ratios that can provide further insight into metabolic balance. These ratios compare relationships between minerals, such as:
- Sodium to potassium
- Calcium to magnesium
- Calcium to phosphorus
- Zinc to copper
Mineral ratios are sometimes considered just as important as absolute mineral levels, as they may indicate interactions between nutrients and potential metabolic patterns.
The report also includes explanatory comments on the potential biological significance of elements that fall outside the reference ranges. These comments are intended to support interpretation by healthcare practitioners.
It is important to note that the report is provided for informational purposes and should be interpreted in consultation with a qualified health professional.
How to Submit a Hair Sample
Submitting a hair sample for testing is simple and requires only a small amount of hair collected close to the scalp.
Sampling guidelines:
- We need 0.3 g of hair. This is equivalent to a full teaspoon or enough to cover a 20-cent coin.
- Only head hair is suitable.
- The hair should be freshly cleaned with a mild, non-medicated shampoo and dry.
- Cut the hair using clean, stainless-steel scissors, close to the scalp. The ideal length is approximately 5 cm.
- If hair has been dyed, bleached, or treated, this should be noted
- Place the sample in an envelope or zip-lock plastic bag
- Include your email address and contact details
Samples can be mailed or delivered to the LabWest laboratory in Malaga, Western Australia.
Once the sample is received, LabWest will issue an electronic invoice prior to analysis. Test results are normally provided by email within approximately four weeks and can also be forwarded directly to your healthcare practitioner if requested.
